Since the manual rear end was going out, we found an automatic differential (which is geared different) and swapped it on my manual 318ti. Before the engine used to rev around 3200rpm at 70mph and now it revs about 4250rpm at 70mph. Besides a decrease

The engine is exerting more effort just to maintain freeway speeds because of the bad power train gearing. So naturally in the long run your engine and transmission would get run down faster.
But I am sure your car would be good in steep mountain
